Climate Issues...

It seems to me that so many governments in this world are fixated on struggling to get the usual power, money, status, or whatever blows their collective hair back, that they have forgotten that all of the above are dependent on there being a habitable world to have them in.

Some of the most intelligent minds on our blue globe have released information that describe what is happening, that give time scales within which we need to work to fix the problems, and give suggestions as to what needs to be done. Looking up "Climate Change" in Google will give you plenty of scary reading.

Yet the politicians and heads of states continue to do exactly what they have always done, right from back in the days of the tribal chieftains - use whatever means they can to achieve the narrow-minded aims of territory, wealth and status.

Surely, for example, the United States, with all its wealth, with all its knowledge, could have taken the lead, could have shown the world, by doing something towards energy generation using solar power, using wind power, and spending money on research towards those aims as well as towards potentially getting humans relocated into space, should our reaction towards the impending climate changes be not sufficient ?

Instead, there seems to be a notion that this whole climate change thing is just a bit of nonsense cooked up by a bunch of whacko, alarmist scientists with their heads in the clouds.

Guys and gals of earth, humans ARE affecting this planet

Like it or not, we have the ability to wipe out the bulk of life on our little home - not through a carelessly pushed button, or some meteor hammering into us, but simply by continuing to live as we are.

Little steps that you and I can do start with just that - walk to the shops ! If you just need a bottle of milk and some bread, leave the car at home. You will be healthier for it, you will save some money and that is just a little less in the way of exhaust fumes being pumped into the atmosphere.

If you really need to run a computer continually - and there are plenty of us out there doing that, then upgrade away from the old Pentium 4 processors - the new Intel Core 2 cpus are more energy efficient and run cooler. Get rid of that CRT monitor and use an LCD screen - they also use less power, and you can turn them off when not needed to save even more - merely going to blank screen still uses power.

Energy-efficient lightbulbs are available - use them ! LED bulbs are due to come out shortly, which are even more economical

Check your geyser - do you really need to run it at 75 degrees C ? Drop that temperature and you save on your monthly power bill - and you drop the energy requirements of one of the energy biggies in your home, especially in the colder climates.

At the moment solar power is not really sufficiently advanced to be able to run a modern household alone, but it would mean less of a drain on the power grid of your city, thereby postponing the time at which yet another power station needs to be built, and who knows, maybe by then wind power and solar power will be sufficently advanced to be a feasible sole power source ?
