Installing libdvdcss2 in Debian

Be advised that libdvdcss2 may not be legal to use in your country – you might wish to check before installing…

In a terminal as root type:

nano -w /etc/apt/sources.list

You now have a terminal showing the repositories for your system.

You need to add the Videolan repository by adding the following to the list of repositories, including the space, full stop and forward slash (please note - all in ONE LINE).

deb ./

Download the videolan keyring as a normal user:

Go to the directory where you downloaded the file – usually your home directory – then run the command to add the keyring to the list of authorised repositories as root:

apt-key add videolan-apt.asc

Now update your system to include the new repo:

apt-get update

Finally install the libdvdcss2 package:

apt-get install libdvdcss2

You should now be able to play any commercial dvd of your choice – tho you may need to install VLC to watch DVDs, or install a selection of codecs for your video-player of choice.
